As always plans change and things happen, particularly in the Peace Corps. The plan had been for use to leave Tamatave at 8 this morning, go back to Baazary Kely pick up our furniture and head to Ranamafana-Est, Jeanette’s site.
Unfortunatly Jeanette got sick last night, most likely food posioning so here we are. She is doing much better now and it is a treat for me to be able to hang out on the internets and eat ice cream and donuts, and though being sick now sucks it gives us bragging rights later on. Just like having to ride a boat to my site reallysucks it gives me something to tell the other PCVs about, and if i have learned anything the last couple of months it is about the comparision.
The comparision is this game we play with each other, the rules are unspoken and no one really addresses the fact that we are playing the game but we are. It is a mind game and we are all looking for sympathy and a little love, and of course the right to loard it over all our fellow PCVs b/c you’ve got it the worst. The idea is to determine whose got it worst, whose site is the worst, who has the worst trip to site, who has been the sickest, who has to wait the longest for mail, ect ect.
I don’t think I win on any of these but I do love comparing my expirences with everyone elses. And in the end it is not who has had the worst time that actually wins but rather the persone who is the best at eliciting sympathy. It isn’t that any of us actually thinks this life is horrible, or all that difficult, if we did we wouldn’t be here. It is just that every one needs to be the best at something, even if that thing you are the best at is complanining about how horrible things are even though they are not that horrible. So we all complain for a while, and then go home reassured that we aren’t in this alone, it is difficult for everyone and it is really shitty that they sent me to have that eyelid surgery all by myself.
